Establishing Clear Boundaries in Your Life

Driving is a superb illustration for all times.

First, what makes driving secure? That line painted down the center of the street. It’s a boundary that tells you what lane is yours and what lane is mine.

Second, in driving and in life, we encounter individuals and circumstances wherever we go that drive us to reply shortly and make good choices that defend our household and ourselves.

And third, to get to the place we wish to go, we’ve to be in the proper lane.

Kevin Thompson, a pastor at Bayside Church in Roseville, California, says, “When we don’t stay in our lane, we focus on a future we can’t control or on a past we can’t undo, and we lose sight of the present. We spin our wheels, but we don’t move forward.”

Kevin joined me on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Establishing Clear Boundaries in Your Life,” to share the best way to strategy tough conditions whereas defending essential relationships. He identifies three lanes for us to navigate inside:

  1. Lane 1: What’s Mine?
“What’s mine in marriage?” You can’t management your partner, however you’ll be able to management your self.
“What’s mine at work?” Examine your job description. Define success. Spend your time doing issues that transfer your profession ahead.
“What’s mine in parenting?” Model intentional dwelling in your youngsters. Don’t management; affect.
  2. Lane 2: What’s Theirs?
Other individuals’s emotions, selections, and penalties belong to them. Honor different individuals’s sense of self. Their life isn’t your life.
  3. Lane 3: What’s God’s?
When we go away God’s stuff to Him, we’re free to like others and to reply to challenges with belief and gratitude.
